Marv Bates had a 30-year sportscasting career on Evansville radio, starting in 1947 at WIKY and moving in 1949 to WGBF. He was the station’s sports director and did play-by-play of University of Evansville and high school basketball and football games, and Evansville Triplets AAA baseball. Using taped sound effects and teletype copy he simulated live broadcasts of the “away” baseball games. Bates was named Indiana Sportscaster of the Year in 1963 and again in 1967. He was among the 29 killed in the December 13, 1977, crash of a charter plane carrying the University of Evansville basketball team.
