Photograph of Chris SchenkelChris Schenkel had an illustrious career as a television sportscaster, marked by his easygoing delivery and baritone voice. Born on a farm at Bippus, Indiana, he attended Purdue University and got his first broadcasting job at WKBV Radio, Richmond. He became the longtime voice of the Professional Bowlers Association, and for 17 years called pro football games of the New York Giants. He was first to cover The Masters golf on TV in 1956, the first to call a college football game coast to coast on ABC, and the first to anchor live Olympic coverage in 1968. Through most of those years he returned to his Lake Tippecanoe home in Indiana between the weekend assignments. Schenkel died at a Fort Wayne hospital September 11, 2005.
